Petition against Single-Use Plastic Shopping Bags

Your Brand New Bag
by Robert Priest June 23, 2008

it's a petroleum blister
your brand new bag

you are hauling greens
in a little oil bubble

immortal flesh
of infinite oil

set to spred
to cover all soils

all seas all beaches
they replicate up out of underground

white cauls, jurassic ghosts
mouthing our groceries

choking our birds
clinging to us

hanging from our wrists
like burnt skin

This petition is being offered in honour of the Town of Leaf Rapids in the Churchill riding which banned single-use plastic shopping bags in their community. This ambitious move was the first of its kind in North America. Now it is a regular part of life in this northern town that people utilize reusable bags. This ban has been in place for over a year now.

The following are pdf versions of the petition that you can download and print for signatures:

English - Legal Size / Letter Size

French - Legal Size / Letter Size

The wording of this petition has been pre-approved by the Clerk of Petitions for the Federal Parliament in Canada. Please do not alter the wording or the signatures that you collect may not be valid.

Rules concerning signature gathering can be found here in both official languages:

http://www.parl.gc.ca/MarleauMontpetit/DocumentViewer.aspx?DocId=1001&Sec=Ch22&Seq=3&Lang=E; and

http://www.parl.gc.ca/MarleauMontpetit/DocumentViewer.aspx?Sec=Ch22&Seq=3&Lang=F.

Essentially, a person need only be of an age to understand what they are signing to legally sign this petition. While Canadian signatures must represent the vast portion of signatures collected one or two signatures out of the 25 needed for submitting would be acceptable from non-Canadians. MPs can sign but they do not count towards the signatures needed. Signatures will be thoroughly checked for fraud by the Clerk of the Petitions.

The petition can either be given to your federal MP for submission or can be given to the MP for Leaf Rapids, Tina Keeper. It can also be sent to me as a single signature or a collection of signatures and I will ensure that they are submitted over the 25 signatures required for presenting to Parliament.

It is our hope that MPs will stand often in the House handing in petitions until we see a ban brought in.
